Technically the best of its time. Karajan renews appreciation for Verdi's score, from the Grand March to high violin harmonics, and supports his cast up to the hilt. Tebaldi & Bergonzi are fine as the lovers, especially in the final scene. Only Cornell McNeill as Amonasro disappoints. Otherwise it's the only recording to convey the heights, depth and perspectives of the piece. It was the Culshaw touch that devises acoustics fitting for each scene. Other recordings give you soloists performing more or less well: this recording gives you the essence of Aida.

Often considered to be the best Aida recording this is a briliant set. Bergonzi and Tebaldi really fit their parts and Karajan brings the score to life. The sound is excellent, the cast generally very strong, I have heard better Amonsaro's than Cornell MacNeil but he is the only weakness, and the price is very attractive.

This has always been a classic performance and recording, a great example of a superb conductor with something to say galvanised by a creative production team led by John Culshaw. The VPO produce sounds of almost supernatural beauty and the cast, led by Tebaldi, is uniformily strong, with the greatest performance coming from Simionato as Amneris. The recording shows its age a bit but is still a remarkable document which helped change the recording history of opera.
