I have 3 different versions of Corelli's Concerto Grossi Op. 12, and this is the best (the others are by I Musici and the Brandenburg Concert). The English Concerts version has great vivacity and but above all rhythm. Although there is much great music on this CD, unless it is played with sufficient sparkle then it can tend to fade into the background. That does not happen with the this version which will occassionally stop you and demand that you concentrate on the music. Concerto no. 10 is particularly well played, and has the rhythm that the other versions lack. Excellent.

This recording of Corelli’s Concerti Grossi, some of his most famous works, is superb. Both the recording and the playing are exciting, engulfing and dramatic, never harsh and never lifeless. Indeed, I felt that the performers had a real love of this music and a light-hearted, involved association with each other.

An added bonus is that it is played on authentic instrument, which adds a real sense of timelessness and mellowness that could never be achieved with modern instruments, especially for these works.
