Product Description

Description
Jazz clarinetist Don Byron is one of the bravest musicians that jazz produced in the '90s. Where most players stick with one particular style, Byron his made albums that embrace adizzying variety of styles and modes, including klezmer, Duke Ellington, Raymond Scott, hip-hop, Robert Schumann, and the avant-garde. Yet there is a common thread running throughthem all: a willingness to take risks, a desire to take jazz further by building on the past, and an appreciation of music of all forms.
On ROMANCE, Byron leads a team of ace players through a set of originals and interesting cover tunes. It couldn't be more un-hip for a jazz musician of his generation to cover an early Beatles tune ("I'll Follow the Sun"), yet Byron makes a beautiful investigation of the melody, keeping the core of the tune but taking it to places it's never been. "Sad Twilight" recalls both the earthy quirkinessof Thelonius Monk and the cool school of Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond. Herbie Hancock's "One Finger Snap" gets an eerie, semi-free-form treatment that takes the tune into a particularly creepy Alfred Hitchcock film. This is a great set ofthoughtful, cutting-edge yet deceptively accessible modern jazz.
