In this memorable recording Peter Schreier confirms the musical intelligence which has made him such a respected Evangelist in Bach's Passions and a brilliant exponent of Schubert Lieder. He uses his voice in surprising ways to convey each nuance of the text and punctuate each twist of the melody--he growls like a black soul diva, for example, on the words "An all dem morschen Tande dieser Erde!" ("With the rotten trifles of this earth!") and fairly hiccups his way through "The Drunken Man in Spring" until there is a final rowdy shout of "Lass mich betrunken sein!" ("Let me be drunk!"). But he is by far from being the only glory of this disc. Birgit Finnilä is a fine alto soloist with a warm, rich voice and achieves some moments of ecstatic rapture in "Der Abschied" ("The Farewell"). Sanderling pays close attention to the details of the score, and elicits playing of clarity and precision--especially from the horns, which is always a good sign in Mahler performances. Overall, a fine version of this much-recorded work. --Warwick Thompson
