5.0 out of 5 stars A powerful Debut Album from a definitive NWOBHM band, 16 Mar 2001
By A Customer
Looking at this album cover, who would have thought that the record inside would play with so much power and heavy metal enthusiasm.

This was the debut album from a band who would help kick start The New Wave Of British Heavy Metal. And for Saxon this album would set the stage for what was to come over the next five or six years as Heavy Metal ruled the UK festival scene.

Although none of the tracks have survived to become concert favourites, each one plays with the energy and familiar sounds that is Saxon.

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCEPTIONAL ALBUM, 7 Oct 2003
By A Customer
This was the start of a long rock career by Saxon, and as a debut album this takes some beating. OK, it's a bit dated (this was 1978/9) but the riffs and melody are timeless. Frozen rainbow is a great long epic track and captures the heart of what Saxon were all about.

Excellent and well worth having in your HM collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great album!, 13 April 2008
By S. Johnson "sijon" (uk) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Although it was their first album, it was my second one I bought back in the very early eighties, Wheels of Steel was my first. I remember seeing it advertised on the back of the '747' single and at the time, me and mates thought 'Wheels' was their first so, very curious and intrigued we were, set out to get it, only thing was there weren't many copies of it around where we lived. I did eventually buy an LP (vynl). I'd already heard 'Rainbow Theme/Frozen Rainbow' and 'Backs to the Wall' so I knew what to expect. I remember most people at the time putting this album down saying that it wasn't 'heavy enough' however, I loved it and still do; I happen to think it's one of their best. It has a very warm 'vibey' sound which invokes associated timeless memories of the past when I play it. Great cover and cracking early shot of the band on the back. I must say though, I do prefer 'Judgement Day' live which appeared on the 'b' side of the single 'Suzy Hold On'. All in all then, a really brilliant album and should most definately be any every Saxon fan's collection.
