4.0 out of 5 stars A Lost Relic?, 26 Aug 2005
By Mr. G. Stubbs (Stafford) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
So close to 5 stars as maybe slightly repetitious in main theme (but isn't that the function of a theme anyway?). There are I feel close similarities with this and the 'Black Hole' soundtrack (never released on cd to date) with both being superior but terribly overlooked due to the lack of critical success of the films. Both were 'reasonable' films but fell short compared to the quality of the soundtrack and as a result an injustice by relationship was engendered. The fact that this music has been painfully rescored and re-recorded from scratch after the original recordings had being 'lost' should point towards the value of this music beyond that of pure commercial value.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Favorite John Barry Score, 28 Jun 2001
By gobirds2 (New England) - See all my reviews
I still remember the first time I saw RAISE THE TITANIC. What impressed me most about the entire film was its prologue. It was a montage of black & white photographs depicting the construction, the launching and the setting sail of the Titanic on its maiden voyage. The montage was accompanied by a hauntingly beautiful piece of music composed by John Barry. In this short yet effective composition John Barry captured the majesty of the Titanic, the romanticism of the sea and the mystique of Britain's maritime heritage in what I consider to be one of the best pieces of film scoring in motion picture history. John Barry's score seems more inspired by the actual tragedy of the Titanic and the unknown dangers of the cold Atlantic waters. Despite the shortcomings of the film, which I attribute to poor editing and not necessarily the script, John Barry's music remains focused on the ship and the sentimentality its tragedy holds for Richard Jordan and Alec Guinness. Jordan and Guinness seem to be the only two characters worth their weight as human beings in the film. Track 6 'All That's Left' is a haunting and beautiful piece of heartbreaking sentimentality in which Guinness reverently hands over to Jordan the flag he took from the sinking Titanic many years before. I have no complaints about this recording and I enjoy it very much. I think there is very little chance that John Barry will ever conduct a new recording of this score. There is also probably little chance that the original score from the actual film will ever be released. I think that Nic Raine and the City of Prague Philharmonic did a splendid job with this recording. Like most of their works, they have to grow on you. However, I believe this to be the finest recording of a score that they have ever issued. I highly recommend that you don't let this one slip away.

5.0 out of 5 stars As graceful as the ship, 13 Jul 2009
By Simon D. Jones "mavmaramis" (Somerset) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I read a review for the John Barry 40 years of Film Music wherein two reviewers berate Nic Raine and even one reviewer goes so far as to ask "Why when the original and superior recordings clearly still exist is an album of 'covers' required." In the case of "Raise the Titanic" the original recordings do not exists.

I have to say then my initial fear when I discovered this was done by Nic Raine and City of Prague Philharmonic were completely negated when I played the "Prologue," "To Cormwall," and "Deep Quest."

It still brought the hairs on the back of my neck standing and it is quite lovingly done to boot.

Barry's composing of this score to bring out the majesty of the ship and the nauticla theme are genuis conposing.

Yes to be fair, portions of this music do sound incredibly similar to portions of the music he composed for "The Black Hole" but all in all I have no complaints about this recording.

Who can forget the stirring music alongside the visuals of the Titanic raising from the ocean - of course we know now it was a very big and very expensive model (now no more than a forgotten relic in of itself in a dry dock in Malta) but still an induring image.

The only thing to bear in mind is that the film was made in 1980 and the actual wreck was not discovered until years later when the was discovered it had broken in two - hindsight is 100% accurate.

A great score done in exteremly well - so ignore all the bad comments regarding Nic Raine and the orchestra.

Let a tear come to your eye and mourn.
