5.0 out of 5 stars Text book for the failure of the opposite sex., 27 May 2002
How long have i been searching for a film that perfectly demonstrates the complexity and the wonder of the male psyche? I am of the opinion that with this film my search came to an end. Mike nichols, best known for the brilliant film "the graduate" performs his duty as director with the same craft and spendour in "Carnal Knowledge". A young Jack Nicholson wonderfully plays a character that we all find ourselves becoming at one point or another, he reminds us all of the raw animalism that exists in all men. This is surely a performance that would be a standout for most actors, but because of his undeniable brilliance, this is one of his lesser known roles. The surpise package in the film comes in Art Garfunkel, a man known for his musical skills, but maintains a strong screen presence and achieves a perfect charecterisation as the sweet but somewhat naive co-lead male role. The effect of the film is clearly demonstrated in the work of Woody Allen, and the philosophy which the film encorporates will stay with the most simple minded of audience.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nicholson Domunanat, 19 Oct 2008
By Mr. Derek R. Osbourne (New Malden, Surrey United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Mike Nichols captivated the cinema world with The Graduate and returned with this film of sexual angst over a twenty year period. Jack Nicholson dominates in his role as the selfish and ultimately self destructive Jonathan but veers towards being over the top in his bullying, self pitying rages. Art Garfunkel, as his friend, plays wonderfully but is overwhelmed by Nicholson's raw energy and emotion.

Candice Bergen never really strikes me as right but Ann-Margret is brilliant as the girl who Nicholson destroys. Worth seeing - of course - worth putting in your top 100 ???????????

5.0 out of 5 stars Ugly Riveting , but a true testomany to how men really are yeah even the so called nice guysv, 20 Oct 2009
I agree with another reviewer I too was left feeling sad and empty at the end of the film,(if your looking for sugar coated endings look elshwhere and there is plenty of mengless comerical cineman that is happy to play it's part in kepping the neo con's and hypocrits happy. Carnial Knowledge is a piece of cinema that shows that not everything in life can be resolved to the guide of a morale compass.) but I still enjoyed this trip into these characters lives.
This is by no means an easy film to watch and you should come to it with an open mind, the characters are not innocent or easily defined, but believable real people you would expect to exist in real life. Made in 1971 the sentiment and dialogue is relevant of today as it was then.
The role of Jonathon is saved from being a non symphetic part by Nicolson's screen presence and moments of melancholic introspection. Garfunkel plays well in tune with Nicholson's Alpha male character his angelic tones.
In this film's case the script is really the thing here but the film is enhanced by Nicols use of an urban New York setting for the two leads expected decline into middle aged aimless philandering and self pity. The women in the film are victims of their own making.
The best film about male bonding and peruit of casual relationship's espescialy considring the era it was made in now days film's believable characters and grity dilouge are the norm cliche but these guys like Nichols really were the inevator's( all free men over the age of thirty should watch this they might not like what they see could for most be like looking into a mirror) since I'm sure most of us (men) have unintenonlly played the role of either a Sandy or Jonathon in our life's in the pursuit off?
If you liked Day's of Wine and Roses and About last Night then this film's theme might resonate with you.
