5.0 out of 5 stars The Melvins album you can listen to between meals …, 9 Dec 2003
By C. Quinn "totality denier" (County Louth, Eire) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
… without ruining your appetite. As much. Even without the overdrive Melvins still sound creepy and stomach-churning. For me the murmuring, whispering, killer-in-the-shadows vocals here are actually an improvement on Buzz's usual moose-in-rutting-season wail, while lifting the veil of noise confirms what we've always believed -- that Melvins can write tunes, lyrics, and above all, grooves.

Don't let that put you off, though. This isn't 'Melvins Unplugged' (for a start, despite what some other reviewers think, it's not acoustic) or an attempt to become more radio-friendly. In fact, following the story of the Maggot/Bootlicker/Crybaby trilogy, it may be an ironic commentary on what happens when certain other bands take that route -- but I don't think you need to know any of that to appreciate this. All you need to know is that Melvins here are as smart and dark and riff-tastic as ever, and you can enjoy 'Bootlicker' at 4am without waking the neighbours. Result!

5.0 out of 5 stars Much oddness, 4 Oct 2001
An unusual album from the Melvins in that, while still remaining as "heavy" as ever, there isn't any distortion on the guitars. This is the second part of their trilogy, the first is the maggot and the third is the Crybaby, both of which are, in my humble opinion, superior. That's not to say this is a bad album, the production is top notch, the bass provides the heavy continuity while the accoustic guitar mesmerises. I read somewhere that the trilogy is to do with the progression of musicians in general (and allegedly Nirvana in particular) and this album is indicative of the softer side emerging after the raw first stages. However, as a standalone album, this does well and if you grow weary of the same old sounds, this is something very new.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Bootlicker by The Melvins is inspiring and brilliant, 21 Aug 2001
By A Customer
This album is amazing. The Melvins are one of the most interesting bands there has ever been and this album shows that. I think there's something for most fans of alternative music on this release. Standout tracks are "let it all be" and "mary lady bobby kins" They manage to play straight up rock and at the same time be highly pretentious and weird. The Melvins have influenced everyone from Faith no More to Nirvana so BUY IT.
