Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
This version of Brahms's massive First Concerto was an instant classic when released in 1962 and recommending it now is still a no-brainer, especially in this effective re-mastering. Curzon gets to the heart of the music. He captures the high drama of the symphonic opening movement, and his rapt concentration makes a profound effect in the Adagio, famous for his controversially slow tempo. Szell is his equal here, conducting with passion. The way he screws up the tension in the orchestra's opening statement and then, through judicious rubato and a warming of the string tone, makes the second subject come alive is a mini-lesson in great conducting. With Boult, Curzon's Franck is on a similarly lofty plane, and the Litolff is a worthy filler. A best buy. --Dan Davis

5.0 out of 5 stars A final farewell to romanticism, 4 Feb 2003
By max waller (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This recording with Szell and Curzon is quite simply a lesson in taut, well controlled playing. From the opening bars both the London Symphony orchestra and the pianist never fail to shine. I feel very much if I had been a soloist in the 60's I would have chosen Szell every time as my conductor. He is immediately sympathetic, but never subserviant to the soloist. He keeps a tight rig and the orchestra make no hesitation, and they all play as if in a single, joyous breath.

The recording is inevitably great from the Decca archives and I feel that although there are some great representatives of the Brahms 1st piano concerto, perhaps none have acheived a greater summation of all the reflective glory contained within this gem of a piece.

5.0 out of 5 stars a must-have piano CD, 22 April 2007
By Mr. Ian A. Macfarlane "almac1975" (Fife, Scotland) - See all my reviews

I've had the Brahms Concerto on this CD since it was issued on Decca SXL some 40 years ago. It is a magnificent performance, really powerful, really moving and very well recorded, with particularly good clarity and balance between piano and orchestra. I recently learned that there was tension at the recording - Curzon, who could be a nervous pianist, had some trouble with bravura passages so that Szell, losing patience, sat down at the piano with all the orchestra watching and played them for him in a 'there - it's not so difficult is it?' vein. Perhaps that intensified the very real and valid sense of nervous energy that is in the performance. With it you get perhaps the best Franck 'Symphonic Variations' in the catalogue, beautifully conducted by Boult, and a delightfully light and sparkling Litolff Scherzo. It's a lovely CD, and when I consider that my Decca LP must have cost £2 all those years ago - the equivalent of what? £60 now? - very good value as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Love Hate Relationship, 30 Sep 2008
By Mr. D. A. Littlewood (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Producer John Culshaw said of this recording that Curzon and Szell resumed their love-hate relationship, but one could be forgiven if all you saw was the hate! They certainly struck sparks off each other to make what is simply one of the greatest concerto recordings ever made. The range is incredible - just listen to the way Szell detonates the fireworks in the orchestral introduction. Then Curzon's playing - elegant, whistful and powerful by turns. I have a great affection for the Serkin / Szell recording, but this probably tops even that. But why debate? Get both of them and the enjoyment is doubled!
The encores are generous and superbly done.
