In many ways Wally Brill could be the Moby for the Jewish tradition. Where the bald techno one created his successful Play album using old field recordings of blues and folk artists, so Brill has used a stash of 78rpm recordings of cantors singing various prayers as the basis of this record. Brill has sampled these melodic and evocative recordings and worked them into some rich fourth world/ambient music which. At its best The Covenant is reminiscent of The Orb at their most coherent: a crisp, clean mash of laid-back beats, polished ambience and carefully placed samples. Elsewhere, Brill's Californian roots come to the New Agey fore; the guitar solos are a tad pat while the recitations from the books of Hollywood guru Deepak Chopra might not be to everyone's taste. These are small quibbles, though. The Covenant plays the easy-on-the-ear ambient game perfectly, putting an extraordinary, relatively unknown music tradition into an invigorating and intriguing modern sound. --Robert Heller
