Ashkenazy and Previn make a great team in this bargain of a CD! People see the price and think that it will be a low quality recording but this is not the case, this recording is one of the only one where the Paganini variations are played at a half-decent tempo. Even with this heightened tempo Ashkenazy's mastery shines through, always feeling the music. The 2nd concerto is equally praiseworthy! Go buy it right now!

A marriage made in heaven, that between Ashkenazy and Rachmaninov? I truly believe so. His interpretation of both of the works upon this disk are second to none. His technical mastery, especially in the Rhapsody, is fantastic. The dynamic contrast that he can instill in a work is breath-taking, making it some of the most breath-taking and awe-inspiring works ever written.

Ashkenazy is a brilliant exponent of these works, his interpretation and style are close enough to the original interpretation by Rachmaninov himself to be almost identical. The works themselves remain, as ever, stunning examples of the late Russian Romantic style, in all it's glory here, reduced to arguably Rachmaninov's finest medium - the piano.
