TUNEFUL REMINDERS OF A GREAT YEAR IN MUSIC, 5 Sep 2003
These ageless songs represent many styles: rock, pop, dance, folk, reggae and soul. My favourites include Kirsty MacColl’s poignant protest song A New England, Kate Bush’s Running Up That Hill, Talking Head’s Road To Nowhere, DeBarge’s infuriatingly catchy Rhythm Of The Night and Stephen Duffy’s catchy Kiss Me. There’s also the interesting vocal work of Fine Young Cannibals with Johnny Come Home, the great rock sound of U2 with Unforgettable Fire, and Paul Hardcastle’s eerie dance track Nineteen with its atmospheric production and simple but effective lyrics, Brian Ferry’s smooth Slave To Love and Elton John’s yearning Nikita. The club and soul genres are also represented by The Commodores (Nightshift), Kool And The Gang (Cherish) and Ashford and Simpson with Solid. There’s enough here of every musical style to please the listener; this album represents some of the most melodic and memorable songs of a great year and a vera fruitful era in popular music.

Yet another NTWICM triumph, 16 Nov 1999
By A Customer
These really save me from having to buy every person's CD when I only want one song!! This is yet another great selection from the Now That's What I Call Music collection. If you loved the 80s, you will definitely love this collection. Phil Collins, Duran Duran, Queen, U2, The Pet Shop Boys are just a few of the great artists represented here. My personal favourite is definitely "New England" which is so laid back and catchy that it's an instant good mood. Of course, "West End Girls" will always rank way up there as one of the best 80s songs ever.
