4.0 out of 5 stars AMAZING VARIETY, 5 Sep 2003
By Pieter "Toypom" (Johannesburg) - See all my reviews
(TOP 10 REVIEWER)
This delightful compilation contains all the 1980s styles from rock, pop, synthpop and soul to folk. It opens with the U2 classic Where The Streets Have No Name and immediately goes into the power pop of Belinda Carlisle with Heaven Is A Place On Earth, followed by the glorious Los Lobos and their energetic cover of La Bamba. The eccentric Was (Not Was) contribute Walk The Dinosaur and ABC perform their poignant tribute to Smokey Robinson, When Smokey Sings, UK soul band Hot Chocolate contribute their club and chart hit You Sexy Thing while from duo Mel & Kim come the catchy Respectable. Two of my favourites are Boy George with his version of Everything I Own (an old reggae classic) and Black with Wonderful Life. There is also great soul in the shape of Labi Siffre and some hot metal in the form of Whitesnake, whilst dancefloor hits include Pump Up The Volume and The Proclaimers do their folk thing with Letter From America. Other interesting tracks are Ideal World by The Christians and Under The Boardwalk by Bruce Willis. Although not amongst my favorites, Duran Duran and The Pet Shop Boys were frequent visitors to the UK charts in this era and definitely merit inclusion. Overall, this album demonstrates the amazing variety of popular music in the middle to late 1980s and is ideal for a theme party or just to get the feel of the times.

2.0 out of 5 stars IT'S GOOD BUT IT'S NOT RIGHT, 1 May 2001
By A Customer
A good album but it's not one of the vintage years of this series. Don;t get me worng, it trundles along nicely with a few good songs to break the tedium but the majority of this collection could easily have stayed in '87 without too much worrying on my part. Saying that though I did enjoy it the first time I listened to it, I just can't quite work up enough enthusiasm to give it another spin!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Blast from the Past, 16 Nov 1999
By A Customer
If you were a music fan in the late 80s, how can you not buy this CD? Classic 80s sounds all on one CD. From the brilliance of U2 in "Where The Streets Have No Name" to the foot-stomping "Pump Up The Volume" to the techno masterpiece from the Pet Shop Boys "It's a Sin". Great stuff! Don't be fooled, there are some tracks which may not tickle your tastebuds (for me personally, "House Arrest" could have been left off the album!), but overall, the album is an excellent collection of 80s greats.
