3.0 out of 5 stars AVERAGE BY COMPARISON, 5 Sep 2003
By Pieter "Toypom" (Johannesburg) - See all my reviews
(TOP 10 REVIEWER)
Somehow this 1986 compilation doesn’t contain all my personal favourites from that year, but it’s still great value for money and provides a fairly comprehensive view of the flavour of the charts. Besides, it also contains the re-release of a major classic from the 1960s, Marvin Gaye’s timeless I Heard It Through The Grapevine. The great soul songs are Billy Ocean’s When The Going Gets Tough, Robert Palmer’s Addicted To Love and James Brown’s hypnotic Living In America. Another delightful classic from this year is Julian Cope’s wonderful World Shut Your mouth. Synthpop was doing well in the shape of Human League, The Communards and Talk Talk, while Bowie was still hitting the charts, although Absolute Beginners is not one of his most memorable hits. After the breakup of Blondie, Debbie Harry did well with French Kissin’ and other songs, whilst Kim Wilde was enjoying great success in the early 1980s with her brand of power pop and the singer-songwriter Chris De Burgh had his biggest hit with the unbearable Lady In Red. Although not my favourite album in the Now Music series, this 1986 compilation does contain some gems of the period.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best of the Best, 16 Nov 1999
By A Customer
You simply can not beat a CD which includes the likes of Queen, Erasure, Bananarama, Blondie, Robert Palmer, Peter Gabriel, Chris De Burgh, The Pet Shop Boys and so many more! These are 80s icons! What a great CD. I'm a little biased because my all time favourite song is included. "Addicted to Love" has to be the best song ever recorded! "Kind of Magic", "French Kissin' in the USA", "In the Army Now" and "Lady in Red" are all unbelievable too. The one or two lemons are worth it for all the other great hits!
