5.0 out of 5 stars FLAVOUR OF THE EARLY 1980s, 4 Oct 2003
By Pieter "Toypom" (Johannesburg) - See all my reviews
(TOP 10 REVIEWER)
This excellent compilation from 1983 gives the listener a fine perspective of the music of the times. It includes a wide spectrum of styles, from synthpop (Human League, Yazoo, Kajagoogoo, Heaven 17) to pop regaae (UB40, Culture Club), to alternative (Siouxsie, The Cure, Public Image Limited) and more. Some of my favourite songs and those that have proved to have timeless appeal, include Billy Joel’s Uptown Girl, Frankie Goes To Hollywood’s massive hit Relax, New Order’s equally huge hit Blue Monday, Eddy Grant’s brilliant reggae number Electric Avenue, The Banshees’ cover of Dear Prudence and Fun Boy Three’s charming Our Lips Are Sealed. Great rock numbers include U2’s New Year’s Day and Tina Turner’s Let’s Stay Together, whilst singer-songwriters like Joe Jackson (Steppin’ Out) and Nik Kershaw (I Won’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me) always produced great work.In Nobody’s Diary, Yazoo established their unique electronic bluesy sound, whilst KC and the Sunshine Band and David Bowie gave us perennial dancefloor favourites in the form of Give It Up and Let’s Dance and Public Image and The Cure pushed the boundaries of experimental rock. 1983 was a great year for music and this album is a treasure trove of some of the era’s best songs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Recorded Nostalgia, 16 Nov 1999
By A Customer
A wonderful collection of 80s nostalgia. Many of the best 80s artists are represented including my personal favourites Billy Joel, Elton Joel, UB40 and Madness. "Electric Avenue" is always a great party tune, as is "Uptown Girl", but I think the best song on board has to be "I Won't Let the Sun Go Down on Me". This is a nostalgic return to beach parties and poolside barbecues when the most stressful thing in my life was my next exam in 3 months time and making the school rugby team. A very nice skip down memory lane.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful reflection of great music, 20 Oct 2000
Containing no less than 11 number ones from artists as diverse as The Jam and New Edition and Billy Joel this CD is the best way to own the majority of the greatest hits from 1983.

Sure to please anyone looking for songs from 83 and also contains classics like Karma Chameleon, Our House and the great Spandau Ballet ballad True. There are also less well known songs that are no less as good. I.O.U. by Freeez is a prime example as is the great pop song Rip It Up by Orange Juice as well as cult classics from New Order wiht Blue Monday and The Cure's Lovecats. All musical genres are covered and top that off with huge stars like Elton John and David Bowie and everybody should find a favourite. Almost every great song of 83 you can think of is included here and that shows how good this CD really is.
