What a stroke of genius! Get the man who immortalised
The Magnificent Seven to do a Western decades on from his last. Only one problem--
Wild Wild West is no Western. In fact, it has no idea how to categorise itself. For a composer under instruction to play things hip (for that read "Will Smith"), this must have been a tantalising yet confounding challenge. With a "Main Title" that takes its sweet time getting to anything resembling a stab at the genre's traditional sound, it's more quickly establishes that we're going to get oddball effects (pseudo-theremin, and watered-down guitar rhythms) on a regular basis. The steampunk look, and cartoon antics of Dr. Loveless demand all these kitchen sink inclusions, so at least you can't accuse the album of being boring. The sheer amount of diversity in 30 minutes is to its detriment however. Bernstein shows he can still write "big" ("Trains, Tanks, and Frayed Ropes", for example), but the adage "less is more" would have benefited the ear for this. If you're looking for an introduction to classic Elmer Bernstein, try
The Magnificent Seven or
The Great Escape first.
