Amazon.co.uk Review

Unlike Mar Azul or earlier releases Miss Perfumado and Cesaria Evora, which were largely collections of the Portuguese-influenced song form called morna, Café Atlantico finds Evora singing Cuban and Brazilian traditionals. Evora's voice is as smooth as ever, but it's a little odd to hear her croon to a bolero or danzon. Still, the connection fits snugly as this release is a tribute to Evora's hometown of Mindelo, a port on the Cape Verdean island of São Vicente where sailors from Portugal, Argentina, Brazil, and the Caribbean cross-pollinated the music of Cape Verde. On Café Atlantico, Evora croons with her usual beauty, poise, and melancholia. Thankfully, instrumental accompaniment again includes the piano and acoustic guitar and bass, but with the flavourful addition of light (and only occasional) orchestral accompaniment, which highlights the creamy richness of this lovely Latin music. Café Atlantico takes a tasteful, innovative step in broadening Evora's repertoire, and its plaintive grace and relaxed romanticism emphasizes what the world has now come to realize: Cesaria Evora is the greatest living singer of our time. --Karen Karleski

CD Description

After nearly a decade of shuffling around barefoot from onefestival stage to another, the Queen of Cape Verde finally went global. West Africa has long looked to Havana for inspiration, and this is a truly transatlantic brew. Smooth and milky at first taste, CAFE ATLANTICO has just enough bitterness to remind us that Evora's roots lie in songs of yearning, loss, and hardship.
There's a good variety of styles andinfluences here: a son straight out of Havana ("Beijo de Longe") and an Angolan forro ("Terezinha") are brave steps away from the plangent guitars and seductive melodies that havecharacterised her albums to date. And there are more than afew salient reminders too of the morna style that she has made her own, notably in "Vaquinha Mansa" and the stylish "Amor di Mundo". The instrumental arrangements come courtesy ofJacques Morelenbaum and are as crafted as you'd expect. This is an album that would make a palm tree bend at the knees and long for summer. Why wait? Kick off your shoes and shuffle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy it!, 11 Jun 2001

I had never heard Cesaria Evora until this album and what pleasure she gives. I love this album. A lot of the songs have a soothing melancholy feeling to them but come over as uplifting rather than depressing. Listening to this after a stressful day is an excellent way to relax and recover your equilibrium.

4.0 out of 5 stars You've got to love Cesaria!, 4 Nov 1999
By A Customer
Just from the CD cover you know this is going to be a corker - Ms Evora's cheeky old face says it all: she is the diva darling of Capo Verde, wearing more gold than you've ever seen, sharing a drink with the good old boys in the local bar. And when you hear the music, you can't blame her. It's unclear whether it's the Afro-Latino rhythms, the mysterious creole lyrics or the astounding quality and diversity of the compositions which make this a hit, but it just works. You will be transported. Enjoy. Bex
