Product Description

Songlines, (Michael Quinn), October 2009

(4 stars) Reveals 21st-century Irish folk music to be in robust good health...an irresistible package.

CD Description

Deep-rooted and thriving, Irish folk is among the most vibrant musical traditions in Europe. Featuring a whirlwind of fiddles, flutes and accordions, this Rough Guide is jam-packed with an infectious blend of Ireland's greatest twenty-first-century music.

It comes with a bonus CD by Karan Casey, her 2008 album 'Ships in the Forest'. Karan Casey has long been one of the most innovative and provocative voices in Irish traditional and folk music. Produced by Donald Shaw, 'Ships in the Forest' is her fifth solo album and focuses largely on the traditional repertoire.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent introductory collection to Irish Folk, 8 Jan 2000
By declan.watts@btinternet.com (Edinburgh, Scotland) - See all my reviews
I was browsing CDs in a local shop, not looking for anything in particular and spotted The Rough Guide to Irish Folk. A quick look at the list of artists suggested it was worth the small investment....and wasn't it just! Some of the artists I have listened to for years, many of them were new to me. Sean Tyrrell's version of Mattie is even better than Christy Moore's (hard to believe). I played the CD to a fairly knowledgeable part-time DJ friend and he said "It isn't fair. Ireland has so many fine female singers...". Listen to Aoife Ni Fhearraigh, Maranna McCluskey of Oige and Mary Dillon of Deanta and you'll see what he means. It isn't often you find a CD without a dodgy track, but this is definitely one of them. Congratulations to the Rough Guide for having the sense to give pen-pictures of each artist, and the details of the albums from which the tracks were taken.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lyrical Ireland, 27 April 2007

It seems very trite to buy a "rough guide" to anything, but this is a marvellous selection of really beautiful and inspiring Irish folk. I don't usually like much folk but this clever collation takes you from contemporary to more classical Irish folk, it is something you will listen to again and again.

5.0 out of 5 stars the rough guide to IRISH FOLK: second edition [2009], 4 Oct 2009
By brazuka (Curitiba, Brazil) - See all my reviews

World Music Network, 2009, RGNET 1226, 67 minutes
Bonus CD: Karan Casey "Ships in the Forest" (2008) - 46 minutes
THIS IS THE SECOND EDITION from the Rough Guide to Irish Folk (the previous reviews are from the first edition, released in 1999).
Digipack, with a informative booklet in English, French and Spanish.
Disc features music and travel text from Rough Guides.
There are many different styles from Irish music: lovely ballads by Patrick Street - "The Rich Irish Lady" (led by Andy Irvine on top form), Seamie O'Dowd - "Crooked Jack" and Robbie O'Connell - "The Flower of Kilkenny".
There are songs in gaelic: "Beauty Deas An Oileáin" sung by Julie Fowlis, "Pota Mór Fataí" sung by Róisín Elsafty and "Jimmy Mó Mhíle Stór" sung by Cara Dillon.
There are extraordinaire jigs and reels, played with passion and beauty, by wonderful musicians like Sharon Shannon (accordion), Catherine McEvoy (flute), Frankie Gavin (fiddle), Arty McGlynn and Graham Dunne (guitar).
Two highlights: the instrumental "Tripin'" with Martin Tourish (piano accordion) and Luke Ward (bouzouki) from the album CLAN RANNALD (2005) and the song "St Patrick Was A Gentleman" by the group Rattle The Boards from the album THE PARISH PLATFORM (2008), featuring guest vocalist comedian John Kenny.
Don't miss the party.
