Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Still for many the ultimate Western, The Magnificent Seven's unarguable position as one of the very best movies in the genre is aided immeasurably by Elmer Bernstein's extraordinarily rich score. It's impossible to picture Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen et al riding abreast without hearing that definitive theme; impossible to visualise the depredations of Eli Walach's nasty Calvera without hearing those angry brass motifs. The music quite literally gallops along on an underlying rhythm that pulsates in time with the horse riders on screen--although Bernstein's masterstroke was always to ensure his tempi were that little bit faster, so all the action cracks along at a tremendous pace. There's also plenty of Spanish colour in the score--guitars and mariachi-style trumpets--and it's all tied together with the kind of harmonic complexity that was unusual in film music then, and even more so now. The original soundtrack album obviously has the stamp of authenticity, but its mono sound is poor. Here Bernstein remains faithful to the original and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra under his guidance give this vivid music all the spirit and colour it deserves. Only the guitar playing lets them down: it sounds like it was recorded in another room. The booklet notes are sadly deficient, but the music itself more than compensates. Undeniably, this is a classic. --Mark Walker
