Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

The fact that The Great Escape (1963) has become perennial Bank Holiday TV fare shouldn't obscure it's status as a cinematic classic; nor should it blind us to the virtues of Elmer Bernstein's dynamic, forthright score. Everyone can whistle the main title march theme on demand--its one of those truly inescapable tunes--but that would be to ignore the harmonic and contrapuntal complexity of Bernstein's musical architecture: this apparently simple march actually contains four principal motifs that are developed throughout the rest of the score. And the rest of the score is a marvel itself: from the pastoral "Blythe" (which in a masculine, male-bonding sort of way is the movie's only love theme) to the propulsive action of the climactic motorbike chase (which is developed from a motif heard in the opening march). Although the (mono) original soundtrack is available from Rykodisc, Elmer Bernstein remains a faithful interpreter of his own score some 35 years on and he elicits from the Royal Scottish National Orchestra--now expert and experienced hands at movie music--a vigorous and spirited performance of this wonderfully kinetic music. The album's skimpy presentation, which contains only a standard biog of the composer and no notes whatsoever about the music, is the only real disappointment. --Mark Walker
