Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

That Beneath the Surface is not a worthy follow-up to the GZA's now-classic solo debut, Liquid Swords , is something of a conundrum. Consolidating his crown as the thinking man's Wu-Tang, Beneath the Surface is a solid combination of intelligent, entertaining lyrics, tight, dextrous delivery and catchy, inventive production. The album spans a wider menu of flavours than its predecessor--from the slow and laidback title track and Latino-guitar laced "Victim" to the more sinister, spine-tingling piano loop of "High Price, Small Reward" or the horrorcore finale of "Outro". "Publicity", a follow-up to his debut's "Labels", is distilled Wu-Tang, cobbled together from the sparsest bars of regal, oriental strings; "Hip Hop Fury" is just that: a frenetic blizzard of piano notes aggressively broken by the RZA's vocals. Nonetheless, with Beneath the Surface comes a mysterious whiff of mediocrity. Despite his undeniable talents, when placed beside his more colourful cohorts the GZA can seem somewhat drab. On an album with very little posturing and self-promotion, with some of the most earnest and po-faced skits ever committed to vinyl and with only a couple of tiny portraits hidden deep within the CD sleeve, what is striking is the author's anonymity. There are standout tracks, but it's easy to feel that while we hear a lot of talk, the GZA himself is both strangely absent and sorely missed. --Paul Philpott

CD Description

GZA is something of a mad scientist-easily one of hiphop's most intellectual and complex MC's. Here he drops his third solo album, BENEATH THE SURFACE. Filled with guest vocal appearances from his Wu-Tang Clan brothers Ol' Dirty Bastard, Killah Priest, Masta Killa, and RZA, BENEATH THE SURFACE is another classic work of GZA word-art. Look no further than the media-hype wordplay of "Publicity" to see why GZA is in a class by himself.
Mathematics and Arabian Knight handle most of the production on BENEATH THE SURFACE, but check the title cut, produced by Inspectah Deck. Don't miss the first single, "Breaker, Breaker", "Amplified Sample", and "Stringplay (Like This, Like That)", the latter featuring a hot verse from Method Man. Who knows when or if we'll see another Wu-Tang album? Until then, BENEATH THE SURFACE is a gem you'llwant to spin over and over again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gza proves himself to be the genius of the Wu., 27 Jun 2000
By A Customer
'The Gza is just the Genius', declares the Wu-Tang on '36th Chambers'. How right they were. Here, on Gza's second long play album, Gza takes his Liquid Swords onto the next level.

Almost describable as String-hop, Gza's passion for orchestral tools shines throughout the album, menacing strings fuel 'Publicity' while cheaky stacarto violins punctuate 'String play'. Production skills, from Gza and Rza add a sound to the album which transcends the listener to a hypnotic world. The albums lyrics are typical Gza: socially and philosphicaly conscious, quick fire vocal blasts which are accompanyed by Rza and Method Man among others Wu guests.

The album has a mournful feel, the title track brimming with regret; in hip hop this is a rare thing.

So to is Gza, taking his own way and own time to change the face of hip hop, bringing a conscious to the genre and beauty to its music.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Genius is Back!!, 28 April 2001
By A Customer
As soon as I got this home and banged it on the stereo, I knew I was onto a winner with this one. The guest appearances by Killah Priest, Method Man and Ghostface Killah are the reason I bought it, but the GZA's lyrical skills, his deap messages and the RZA's beat back-drop are the reason I keep it in my Hi-Fi. I bought Liquid Swords, and was impressed, but this kills everything before. If you loved The W, Wu-Tang Forever, Liquid Swords or Supreme Clientelle, then this is a must

2.0 out of 5 stars Probably the biggest disappointment ever, 21 Feb 2003
By J. W. Bassett (Kent, England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
With the Wu-circa 1999 treading water, it was hoped that the Genius / Gza (creator of the 2nd best album ever made, in this reviewer's opinion) would be the spark to inspire the entire crew to get back to their best. Unfortunately, anyone pinning their hopes on the Gza was wildly disappointed. It only takes a cursory glance at the track list to set off alarm bells. An Intro, an Outro and 4 skits find their way amongst the eighteen tracks.

The opening track on the LP 'Amplified Sample' is one the better tracks, that however, is more a mark of the overall quality of the LP than the track. The production by Mathematics is purely Rza-by-numbers, but worse is that Gza chooses to use the same verse twice. One would like to think that this was done intentionally for some obtuse artistic reason. However, I can only think that it was performed out of laziness. Worse still, on the track 'Feel Like An Enemy', Gza doesn't appear at all, instead leaving to the Sunz Of Man. It's this kind of cheap filler material that is selling the Wu fans down the river.

Of the positives, the title track is a nod to the master storyteller that Gza used to be, "On a man made lake there's a layer of thin ice / where unskilled skaters cut figure eights twice." Elsewhere 'Hip Hop Fury' is an enchanting mixture of xylophone and bass, which houses some of the best lines on the entire record. Unfortunately there isn't much else worthy of anyone's eardrum.

Overall the problem with this LP is that Gza simply isn't on it enough. On some tracks he actually does nothing, on others he gives his audience one verse and on one he repeats the same verse twice. All in all this is a blueprint for how to go from amazing to amazingly bad.
