5.0 out of 5 stars "One of their best - even without Quiver!!", 26 Oct 2000
By martin@froggatts.demon.co.uk (Sutton Coldfield, England) - See all my reviews
Having purchased all of their albums on vinyl, it is great to be able to get most of the early ones on CD. Starting off with the Dylan-esque "Lady Like You", this album never lets up from start to finish. Muff Winwood's keyboard helps to give a fuller sound, along with occasional orchestration. "Ireland" must be one of the first protest songs about the Belfast Troubles, but the message is still relevant almost 30 years on! Was surprised that one track from the vinyl album has been replaced by the classic "Sailing" - there was plenty of room left on the CD to include 11 tracks. A must buy for anyone looking for the next Beatles in the early 70's!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent melodic song-writing!, 17 Jun 2009

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
The Sutherland Brothers were always under-rated as a band despite being amongst the best song-writers in the country. Not even the "Arms of Mary" hit, that they had with Tim Renwick on board as the Sutherland Brothers & Quiver, was able to propel them to real stardom and they remained relatively unknown. My view is that in merging influences from the pop and folk worlds they actually made their music unappealing to many fans of those genres: additionally, their music was never heavy enough to appeal to many in the rock crowd.

That some of their recorded material survives to this day and is now beginning to surface on mp3 downloads such as this is a tribute to their insightful fans who could see past all the "fluff" I've alluded to above and have never lost faith in their music. If you're new to the band, then "Lifeboat" is a good place to start.

I remember having "Lifeboat" on vinyl as a teenager and always enjoying the album, so was really pleased to have the opportunity to purchase the mp3 download now that I no longer have the capability for playing records. "Lifeboat" is, of course, the album that first brought "Sailing" to light. This song really exemplifies what I was saying above: presented here in quite a folky production with a big drum beat sound that is slightly over-powering, it was stripped down to its melodic essence and given a lush pop arrangement for Rod Stewart's massive no.1 hit.

Look elsewhere on "Lifeboat" and you will find plenty of other songs that are equally rich in melody and catch hooks: "Real Love", which closes the album, is a big favourite of mine, but there are really no weak tracks on here. "Ireland" and "Space Hymn" are what might be termed conscience songs (without losing the music's melodic sensibility) and the others whose hooks you'll struggle to shake off are "Lifeboat" itself and "Love is My Religion".

The mp3 download quality is good, no worries there.

So, overall a strong album - well recommended!
