After leaving the enormously popular Spice Girls in May, 1998, Geri Halliwell (Ginger Spice) re-emerged and reinvented herself with SCHIZOPHONIC. The album is based on her experiences over the past year and shows a maturing Geri displaying"woman power" over "girl power". "Look At Me" is bombastic pop a la "Livin La Vida Loca", with a bossa nova feel to it that would fit perfectly on an Austin Powers soundtrack. "Lift Me Up" has a Spice-ish quality and features smooth multi-layered harmonies.
"Walkaway", a wistful, well-orchestrated ballad, showcases Geri's fine vocal talents and is an obvious reference to her departure from the top female group onthe planet. The remainder of the album employs a variety ofstyles, as evidenced by the Latin-inflected "Mi Chico Latino". SCHIZOPHONIC is tightly produced and features magnificent musicianship. Spice fans as well as pop connoisseurs should buy this album immediately.

Ah, Geri Halliwell, what more could possible be written about one of the most talked about women of the late 90's, a time when it seemed that Geri's face and voice accosted you from every billboard, radio and TV set up and down the land.

Seeing this, her debut album, in a charity shop recently I took the plunge and shed out the monumental amount asking price of a single £1 to sample the legendary Ginger Spice.

Being the first member of the Spice Girls to depart and try her hand at a solo career, it's pretty obvious the music moguls controlling Geri's career decided it was important to get this album out onto the market and establish her as a single entity. The album has a definite rushed and hurried feel to it. None of the songs have that polished quality of tracks that have been lovingly tinkered with until they sound perfect. The overall concept of the album is similarly cobbled together, you can also picture the "team" responsible crowed around the board room table discussing, "right that's the slow ballad for the album, now all we need is the camp disco dance track and the latin salsa track".

The album tries to be all things to all people. It tries too many different styles and accomplishes none of them well. Whether that's the curious combinations of Bhangra-Rap or Gospel Clap-Along or anything else that Geri attempts here.
Ms Halliwell tries oh so hard to sound consummate and individual and yet basically her voice just isn't up to it, it's weak, toneless, soulless and completely without character.

And now this is where I turn it all around and say how much I actually enjoy the album. Because it tries to be all things, the one thing it achieves with aplomb is being uncontroversial and inoffensive. It is perfect party music, it is perfect background music, it is perfect driving music, it is perfect sing-a-long music. It's the sort of album you put on to listen to one track and then end up listening to the whole thing.

The album is unashamedly without integrity or style but it is pure unadulterated pop and when was pop ever meant to have integrity? And when did pop ever sound so good?

This album is one which anyone will be surprised with. I had never noticed what a brillient artist Geri was. On this album she displays her songwriting and singing talents, displayed in a very anti-ginger way...less in your face but more in your head, a beutiful way to get to a listener.
Geri is proving something here, which I know see now that all the Spice Girls have done solo stuff, which is the term too many cooks spoil the broth. Together the girls are Great, apart, they're breath taking, and Geri is the best of them all, even Mel C!
I think this album has a few weak points, but not many, and the whole thing is super, and 100% enjoyable, the best songs being Look at Me, You're in a Bubble and Bag it up. Everyone should have this album to enjoy and chill out to.

I love this album. After being a closet Spice Girls fan, I was unsure that Geri would succeed on her own, as a solo artist. I don't know why I had those doubts! Geri is running circles around other female artists of the same genre! I love the funky "Look At Me", the fiesty "Bag It Up", the sentimental "Lift Me Up", the Monroe-esque "Goodnight Kiss", the brilliant "Mi Chico Latino" and the tongue-in-cheek "You're In A Bubble". Not an album by platform-wearing, girl-power screaming Ginger Spice, but by a mature, dedicated and talented Geri Halliwell. Love it!
