4.0 out of 5 stars A marvellous account of a magical score, 3 Dec 2003
By Giles Allison (London, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
As the reviewer below states, Bax's Second Symphony has often been considered runner-up to the Third. The two works actually share similar structures: a menacing, disturbing first movement followed by a dreamy, twilit lento movement and then a finale where all hell rips loose only to drift away into a beautiful coda. But the Second, notwithstanding the gentler moments in the second movement (which at times seem to anticipate Vaughan Williams' Fifth Symphony) has an undercurrent of tragedy which for me sets it apart from the other symphonies. David Lloyd-Jones captures this very well (if not quite to the degree that Handley does in his recent Chandos recording). He paces the second movement well, catching its ambivalent mood, while the rasping opening of the finale is excellently played by the RSNO brass. The desolate coda conveys a real sense of loss.

Listeners new to Bax would do very well to start with this cd, or the same team's recording of the Third Symphony. Both works capture the essence of Bax at the full peak of his powers. To anyone unsure whether to take the plunge: Bax's sound world is pretty unique, but if you respond to post-romantic, early 20th century music in general and Holst, VW, Sibelius, Ravel, Scriabin or Szymanowski in particular, then a real treat is in store.

4.0 out of 5 stars Colour, Vitality, Violence and Questions to the last, 15 Jan 2003
By Bernard Davis "Bernard Davis" (Birmingham, England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)
Until recently I thought that Bax's second symphony was a lesser work to his more restrained third. But on recent listenings I have become increasingly enthusiastic about this work.

The first movement is an explosion of orchestral colour: there are gentler moments but much of this is demonic ballet music. To take another angle: I can't decide whether this is the sound of a younger composer updating Elgar for the early modern era or the sound of him giving Elgar a good kicking. Whichever it is, it is certainly done with enthusiasm and the orchestra revels in the brutality of the score.

How to follow that? The slow movement has beautiful moments but it is also disquieting. Nothing is taken for granted, there are questions everywhere. The finale opens with an ominous fanfare and march: there is no settling of or in the score yet. Finally their is a kind of resolution amongst dreamy harps and woodwind, but questioning chords continue until the end.

November Woods is a typical Bax tone poem with much wind and indeed gale blowing through the trees. It recieves an excellent performance here, far superior to Bryden Thomson's account on Chandos.

Other discs in this series have been rightly praised - don't miss out on this one - and if it doesn't impress at first - give it time.
