Amazon.co.uk Review

Assembled by producers and kneecapped by the departure of their most distinctive singer, Dawn Robinson, En Vogue remains the definitive diva-soul harmony group of the '90s, less on the strength of their meringuey harmonies than on their extraordinary material. This collection, cannily sequenced to hide later, lesser tracks between the hits, skims the cream from their three albums and EP, throws in 1998's "No Fool No More" single, and generally opts for album versions rather than EV's spiffy single remixes. It reveals an act that went from pleasant Soul II Soul-ish fluff to real soul power when it dedicated itself to updating R&B and funk traditions: quoting Funkadelic (and later paraphrasing their "Knee Deep" as "Let It Flow"), harmonizing over a stuttering James Brown riff, and getting their slow jams by way of 1960s deep-soul ballads. --Douglas Wolk

CD Description

En Vogue laid the template for sexy, sassy R&B girl-groups in the '90s and 2000s with their distinctive mixture of old-school soul and funk with cool harmonies, and a stylish, MTV-ready image. They were also one of the first groups to fusea hip-hop sensibility with R&B to commercially successful ends, and as such paved the way for acts like TLC and Destiny's Child. Arguably, though, En Vogue outdistances their successors with their smooth, effortless harmonies, stylistically eclectic sound, and strong material.
The strength of that material is evident throughout BEST OF EN VOGUE, a set that acts as both a career overview and a highlights collection. The group's later, somewhat lesser material is sequenced in among their hits, but at their strongest--as on the killer "My Lovin' (You're Never Gonna Get It)" and the Funkadelic-inspired "Free Your Mind"--En Vogue proves that they were the best at their game. Outside of their sophomore release, FUNKY DIVAS, BEST OF should cover all the essential En Vogue a fan could want.

This cd contains some really great tunes from en vogue. The tracks range from the funky 'whatta man' to the smooth 'no fool no more'. The songs featured really show off their excellent vocals. This album is worthit simply because of the amount of great tunes you get on one fantastic cd! I definately recommend if you enjoy en vogues funky, energetic r'n'b. Definately one the best cd's I have purchased recently!

4.0 out of 5 stars funky Rnb, 13 Jul 2005
This is without a doubt a great commercial RnB Cd forget your Destiny's Child etc hear what an modern RnB album should sound like from the original super power girl group and the best! however personally I would recommend you purchase the Funky Divas album as that contains the best matierial every thing else kind of declined after that and Born to Sing was slightly more immature although it does contain a couple of classics which are on this album, but Funky Divas is the best by a mile

4.0 out of 5 stars Funky familiar tracks plus some hidden surprises, 30 Jul 2001
By A Customer
I bought this CD knowing what 5 of the tracks sounded like, so it was a pretty safe buy. From the Janet Jackson inspired 'Free Your Mind' to the soulful bliss of 'Don't Let Go', this CD is quality, quality, quality. Track 2 begins a capella, then breaks into a more deep but funky beat. The CD is called THE BEST OF. You'd better believe it.
