Product Description

CD Description

Ancient Mother is a beautifully produced album of songs and chants in praise of the divine feminine. The music ranges from the spiritual song of the 12th century mystic Hildegarde de Bingen to the ecstatic gospel-rock rendition of the Wiccan 'Casting the Circle' invocation.

5.0 out of 5 stars powerful and haunting, energetic and moving., 3 Nov 2001
By A Customer
This album creates a superb atmosphere, whether in ritual, meditation or just doing the housework, its a shame i had not come across this album sooner. The voices are powerful and moving, and the choral sequences are absolutely fabulous; and its easy to imagine and almost feel the energy raised when these tracks were recorded. The final track 'the circle is cast' makes your skin crawl with the energy of the powerful vocals and frantic chanting towards the end of the track. An album which should adorn the cd shelf of any respectable Pagan, and so much better than the usual heavy rock, inner ear destroying noise of most Pagan groups. A must buy cd, you'll love it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best for the legitimate musical work of Goddess priestess', 27 Nov 2001
By A Customer
Musically Literate Pagan Says:
I bought this two years ago and I have not regretted it. The choir sings "Ancient Mother" and it is a deeply atmospheric listenable setting. I found Lady of the Flowing Waters a bit twee lyrically but it has grown on me. The rewritten lyrics for the psalm I actually find far too cliched. The Circle is Cast is gospel in style and rousing but again is lyrically twee. The real gems on this CD, and make it crucial for any pagan are the tracks recorded by genuine practicing priestess' and women shamen from around the world. These are rarely to be found (I know, I've looked long and hard). From India is the Kali Bhajan, from Hawaii is "Puna Is Dancing" (very powerful), from the Caribbean is my other album fave after Ancient Mother, "Yemaya". A solo flute piece of no fixed cultural origin captures the Mysteries of Her fantastically well. Noirin Ni Riann contributes her Celtic heritage of Mary and Brooke Medicine Eagle sings a Native American healing chant in a cave. All of these make up completely and then some for two or three songs which are lyrically cliched. Because the words are pagan doesn't necessarily mean that justifies them having overused imagery !
But that said, if you follow the Goddess, just buy it. Don't think about it. The priestesses featured, including Zsussana Budapest perfoming a Hungarian song give it the highest stamp of authenticity and you will listen to it again and again in a variety of circumstances
