5.0 out of 5 stars In a Rhapsody About the Rhapsody, 25 Mar 2009
By Rev. S. S. Mcfarland - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This CD is all wonderful, at the very top of Brahms recordings - See the current Penguin Guide - but I want to concentrate on the Alto Rhapsody. One day when I had just begun to take an interest in classical music, I was wallpapering a bedroom with the radio on and this recording of the Alto Rhapsody was played. It was so stunning I had to stop my work to listen. That memory remains and I have just listened to it again. Christa Ludwig is breathtaking. She swoops down to lowest level, gathers up all her listeners and carries them up and up to the highest heights. What a voice! What a performance! Klemperer is Klemperer. His back doesn't bend. On one famous occasion when rehearsing a work, he noticed that Walter Legge did not much like his approach. He said, " You do not like it Herr Legge? You will get to like it!" He is always in full regimentals, never in open-neck shirt and jeans. Sometimes his work is ponderous as in his recording of Haydn symphonies but often there is great life, energy and momentum. Hear his Beethoven symphonies, especially the Pastoral, and his Mozart symphonies. Brahms' music was made for him and this is glorious. The Philharmnia Orchestra of that era was the very best and was created by Legge to be a recording orchestra. This is pure gold. Don't miss it

5.0 out of 5 stars the summit of a Brahms' symphony, 26 April 2004
In a word, this recording is superb. A majestic, heartfelt and studiousinterpretation of three masterpieces, Klemperer has never been better.

5.0 out of 5 stars A granite-like Brahms 1, 10 Mar 2009
By J. Tyrrell (Birmingham UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This has to be my favourite recording of Brahms' First Symphony. I did hear Klemperer conduct this at a concert in London and the enduring memory is of a finale which built to a solid, shattering conclusion. He did much the same with Bruckner's Eighth Symphony. I know the first movement should move along much faster than it does here, but as with Klemperer's legendary Beethoven there is a powerful insistence which carries the listener screwing the intensity to a high pitch. I bought this as an l.p. when it was first issued exchanging it for a boxed set when the Brahms cycle was re-issued together, although a Toscanini recording of the second, issued on HMV in the UK, became first choice. I can't find that lyrical reading on CD. I like Kempe with the Berlin Philharmonic in the third and Karajan's Philharmonia recoding of no 4. This is apart from a Furtwangler performance with the Berlin Philharmonic where the passacaglia finale is of unbelievable intensity.
