Listening to this album is like coming across an oasis in the 'desert' of contemporary music. If this had been released in the UK, instead of as the soundtrack to an Italian cult-movie, we would all be humming the tunes nostalgically by now. As it is they are a haunting reflection of the psychedelic era.
Freedom is a four-piece band of obviously accomplished instumentalists, occasionally augmented with string or horn sections (happily, unsynthesised). Steve Shirley's voice has that attractive 'Steve Windwood' quality to it and his bass playing is solid throughout. Ray Royer's guitar style has a very nice country-blues feel. Mike Lease is equally at home on the Hammond organ or the piano and Bobby Harrison's drumming really 'cooks'. My favourite tracks are 'The Better Side' - superb string arrangement and jazz-flavoured piano, 'With You' - lovely interplay between organ and guitar, and 'The Truth is Plain to See'. A welcome surprise are the bonus tracks with slight variations on the originals e.g. single-track vocal, FX, etc. No collection of significant sixties albums will be complete, without this recording. An absolute must!
