5.0 out of 5 stars Ideal performance of this repertoire, 9 Jan 2004
By David B "Piano David" (GOUROCK, Renfrewshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews

This is a lovely recording of American art songs. Nathan Gunn's voice has just the right 'weight' for this repertoire, and the performance is both heartfelt and stylish. There is a nice mix of American repertoire here and some of the arrangements are unusual and lovely. The accompaniment is accomplished.
I obtained this CD secondhand recently, having noted a review years ago but never finding the CD, in the days before online ordering! I'm delighted to have obtained it at last. A most satisfying disc.

5.0 out of 5 stars Marvelous debut album, 7 Aug 2001
By A Customer
This first album by the young American baritone, Nathan Gunn, is definitely worth every music lover's attention. Gunn possesses a rich and sonorous baritone which he uses to wonderful effect. The song selection is superb and ranges from the familiar to the new, and from the traditional to the adventurous. But even such familiarly beautiful songs such as "Shenandoah", which opens the album, are set with imagination and a touch of poignant dissonance. A real find on the album are the songs of Gene Scheer. Listen especially to "At Howard Hawks' House" and "Lean Away". The latter is a love song that will knock your socks off. But also introduced to me were the songs of Weinstein and Bolcom. Here note especially "Black Max", a rich, almost surrealistically threatening song which nevertheless conveys a dark humor as it introduces us to the mysterious Max. Beautifully performed also are the traditional Copland folk songs. Kevin Murphy's accompaniment is accomplished and sympathetic.
