After winning an Oscar for
Il Postino, Luis Bacalov picks up the romantic mail bag to deliver another
Love Letter. In an audacious bit of thinking, the New England coastal setting is completely ignored in favour of a very European skip across an intimate dance floor. With an accordion, mandolin, and bandoneòn there's a most delightful build-up to the tango we know must be coming. When it does--"You Can't Love A Letter"--the impulse to grab your partner's hand is overwhelming, especially with its bongo breakdowns. The main theme also gets its skirts kicked up by the tango format, but is a touching melody in subtler guises such as the composer's own piano rendition closing the disc with "Imagine Being In Love". The two songs included might have been better positioned last, but neither Chet Baker ('I've Never Been In Love Before") nor Louis Armstrong ('I'm In The Mood For Love') could ever be accused of putting out the flames of passion. --
