Product Description

CD Description

The Small Faces were one of the greatest English bands of the '60s. Starting as a tough mod R&B group, they evolved into an inventive, psychedelic-tinged rock band before splitting up in 1968 when singer Steve Marriott left to form Humble Pie. THE DARLINGS OF WAPPING WHARF LAUNDERETTE, the first collection authorised by the surviving members of the group, is a long overdue, definitive 50-track anthology of the SmallFaces' 1966-1968 stint with the legendary Immediate Recordslabel.
Comprised of rare singles, alternate takes, and the two albums the band recorded for Immediate (including theentire OGDEN'S NUT GONE FLAKE), THE DARLINGS OF WAPPING WHARF LAUNDERETTE is packed with prime tracks that range from the hazy flower power of "Here Comes the Nice", "Itchycoo Park", and "Lazy Sunday" to the lesser-known but no less sublime psych-pop of "Green Circles", and the gritty R&B of "My Way of Giving". Boasting superbly remastered sound and extensive liner notes, THE DARLINGS OF WAPPING WHARF LAUNDERETTE showcases the Small Faces at their psychedelic best.

5.0 out of 5 stars PURE MOD!, 31 May 2001
The Small Faces were one of the most adventurous bands in the history of rock. The first CD of this set charts their musical journey from their pure Mod beginings through their phsycodellic phase to the virtually punk 'Lazy Sunday'. The CD shows how before their time this band really were, with the electric guitar solos in 'Afterglow of Your Love', that are more atune to Heavy Metal solos than Mersey Beat jangles.

The second CD tracks the surreal journey of Happyness Stan, a fanscinating journey of musical discovery taken from the Small Faces' classic album 'Ogden's Nut Gone Flake'.

This CD is a must buy for all aspiring mods and Small Faces' fans, and for anyone who likes good music.

Long live 'The Darlings of Wapping Wharf Laundrette'!

5.0 out of 5 stars top of the britpops, 1 Dec 2007
By jon atack "jonatack.com" (nottingham, england) - See all my reviews
This album combines Ogden's Nut Gone Flake and the Autumn Stone with every additional recording made at Immediate Records. Ogden's was the best concept album of the sixties - a less earnest version of the Tommy story. The narration, by the Professor, Stanley Unwin, is a pure delight (check him as Johnny Saveloy's agent on the Church of Chemicalology in Ardman's wonderful Rex the Runt, too). Steve Marriot was one of the great blue-eyed soul singers. It's a shame that he abandoned the Small Faces to form Humble Pie, despite the Pie's achievements and those of the Faces - as the remaining members became with the addition of Ron Wood and Rod Stewart. The Small Faces were musically tight and wrote songs every bit as good as Ray Davies with the Kinks. With Itchycoo Park, they became the best psychedelic pop act in Britain. The only reservation is the lack of the marvellous cover from Ogden's, but this is the Small Faces' album to buy, and it is essential to any 60s Britpop collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars A bargain, 21 Nov 2004

(TOP 100 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Even more of a bargain than it appeared since as well as a lot of A and B sides this Immediate compilation includes their two albums for the label in their entirety plus all the new recordings that appeared on the Autumn Stone collection after they had broken up, all in excellent remastered sound
