5.0 out of 5 stars Great American opera; the British would love it!, 15 Feb 2003
By V. Chau (San Diego, CA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I want to start this review by voicing my appreciation of the amazing Beverly Sills. She is an absolutely great soprano. I consider her to be even better than the great Maria Callas. She has made an enormous contribution to the art of opera and to coloratura singing. She is often not given credit for helping revive neglected bel canto masterpieces. Well, I for one, appreciate the contributions that she has made to the revival of bel canto operas throughout the opera world. She is one great lady.

Now, on to the review. This recording should be the gold standard upon which other recordings of this opera should be judged. All the cast members give excellent, committed perfomances. The chorus and orchestra are also great. Frances Bible is a great Augusta, singing with rich tone, clear diction, and dramatic commitment. Walter Cassel is a great Horace Tabor. He sounds manly and makes the listener actually sympathize with his character. Beverly Sills gives one of her best perfomances on record. She is absolutely convincing as Baby Doe. Her five arias are delivered magnificently. The high notes in the Willow Song are very secure and very beautiful. The high D natural is especially lovely. Her high notes are not shrill in this recording. They are some of the loveliest that you are likely to ever hear from a high soprano. Her high notes are accompanied by exquisite overtones. She never indulges in show-off operatic vocalizing. The last aria she sings will break your heart with its beauty, sincerity, and absolutely dead-on delivery. She literally is Baby Doe throughout the opera. Her diction is crystal clear.

Douglas Moore wrote a wonderful opera. "The Ballad of Baby Doe" is truly his masterpiece. He has left the opera world a true musical gem. I agree wholeheartedly with the reviewer who said that he is America's Bizet.

The recording itself has very good sound. It is true that the voices are heard more clearly than the orchestra is, but one soon adjusts to the sound. This is an absolute jewel of an opera recording. I highly recommend it.
