Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

This CD documents an epochal 1998 performance by three Algerian singer-composers. Khaled is the undisputed king of rai, a rebellious, Western-influenced style spawned in the port city of Oran. As he was in constant danger from outraged Muslim fundamentalists, he fled to Paris. Later on, Rachid Taha formed a rock band called Carte de Sejour (Green Card), which addressed the concerns of downtrodden immigrant populations in France. Last but not least, the talented newcomer Faudel is often referred to as Khaled's heir-apparent. The 13 tracks include such monster hits as "Didi", "N'ssi N'ssi" and "Chebba" plus "Aicha", a bit of ear-candy by Jean-Jacques Goldman, plus the French pop chestnut, "Comme D'Habitude". It is easily one of the best-engineered live recordings ever made, capturing the empathy shared by the singers and a wildly enthusiastic audience and providing an indelible sense of time and place. --Christina Roden

5.0 out of 5 stars A great album for music-lovers, 21 May 2005
This review is from: 1,2,3 Soleils (Audio CD)
You don't have to be a Khaled, Taha or Faudel fan to like this CD. You don't even need who know who they are or what they sing. But if you are a genuine music fan, then this album is a must. They sing a combination of all three singers' songs (such as Aicha, Didi and ya rayah) and incorpreate deep retro Algerian music sounds and style ith western styles such as funk and reggae. It all comes together in a beatiful harmony (they had over 36 musicians to accompany them) in what must have been a thrilling concert.

What adds to that atmosphere is that it is taken from a live concert in a sell-out arena in Paris. Overall this is an all-time great, must-by CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Eclectic, 28 May 2002
This CD is worth every penny. Recorded live in concert, it portrays the passion of the three singers so intensely. One gets the sense that whoever was there had the time of their lives. Aicha is one of the best songs on this CD, written so eloquently and sung so beautifully - it will surely strike a chord with anyone who takes the time to listen to it. Give yourself a chance to be enlightened by this wonderful eclectic mix of Arab/African/French cultures. What are you waiting for?

5.0 out of 5 stars 1,2,3 Soleils, 29 Dec 2004

(REAL NAME)
I have long been a fan of Cheb Khaled, but had not heard anything by Chebs Faudel and Taha.
From the very first track this album totally blew me away! The 3 great Chebs show how to put on a show in true Algerian style! This CD has been played over and over so many times that I am considering purchasing another copy for when this copy has had it!
I have always loved Cheb Khaled's rendition of Abdel Kader and to be honest, this was my original reason for buying it. However Chebs Faudel and Taha have left such an impressive impression (can you say that?) that I am now scouring the Amazon archives for material by Cheb Faudel and Cheb Rachid Taha! Excellent!!!
This really is Algerian Rai at its very best!!
