4.0 out of 5 stars Remarkable for combining clarity & detail with passion, 12 Dec 2000
When I head that the choir of King's College Cambridge had recorded the Rachmaninov Vespers I was both surprised and somewhat dismissive. Not only the boy choristers, but how could young English undergraduates provide the sonorous underpinning required of the legendary Russian basses, I asked.

I don't know what Stephen Cleobury feeds his choral scholars these days, but there are some startlingly wonderful sounds on this disk. The basses in a truly Russian performance certainly have even more profundo depth, but you have to put up with all that wild warbling from the upper voices. The boys voices, together with the ethereal tones of the counter-tenors and sharply focussed regular tenors of the King's choir, produce a transparency of tone and intonation that is made for this music, being mostly chordal.

I was amazed when I walked into a friend's flat in paris last month and he said, listen to this. The almost eerie sounds wafted out of the room and down the Boulevarde Malesherbes. It didn't quite stop the traffic, but it stopped me in my tracks!

Buy this record now, you won't be disappointed!! The King's basses are amazing!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Blissful, 9 Jul 2007
By Lan D "Lan" (Houston, TX United States) - See all my reviews
Written in 1916 in the depths of his depression over what was happening to his beloved native Russia, Rachmaninoff poured his soul into this work.

And what a work it is! Mr. Cleobury and the boys of Kings College do a superb job of bringing its every mournful nuance to life. Better than any Russian version I've heard!

To have died and never to have experience this music would be sad indeed, for through its sadness there is a radiance which transcends and carries one away to blissful places then gently back again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vespers, 15 April 2006
By T. Pearce "Bookworm" (Sussex, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
One of my most played CDs - the music is haunting, the production superb. Play with good quality equipment and the basses are stunning. I thought when purchasing this CD that no-one could come close to a Russian choir to do this work true justice.....but I have been proved wrong. Trinity College continue to excel.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad - but not Russian enough
I picked up this version of the 'Vespers' to replace a stolen CD some years ago, and it's a good recording, in the main - perfectly adequate. Read more
