Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
As an aspiring DJ, the Irish-born David Holmes wanted to score movies, but producers weren't exactly beating a path to his door. So instead, he decided to make imaginary soundtracks of his own--to set music to the films he carried round in his head. This album was the result: an ambitious, diverse and, yes, profoundly cinematic collection of electronic tracks. The opening cut, "No Man's Land," was reportedly inspired by the Daniel Day-Lewis film In The Name Of The Father--and in the same way, it's possible to see "Gone" as a relic from some late-1960s arthouse classic, thanks to the breathy guest vocals of Saint Etienne's Sarah Cracknell. Jah Wobble guests on "Got Fucked Up Along The Way," while Steve Hillage contributes some typically mesmeric guitar to "Inspired By Leyburn"--but mostly this is Holmes's baby, showcasing his gift for arrangement and his fondness for atmospherics. Since its release, he's even gotten to compose some music for film and TV--proving, yet again, that you make your own luck. --Andrew McGuire

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth checking out, 13 Aug 2001

I bought this because I liked the title and knew Holmes had done the Out Of Sight ost. From the first playing (with headphones - the production on this CD calls out to be heard through headphones), I was hooked. This sounds like a movie soundtrack, somewhere in between the Dust Brothers' Fight Club and Hans Zimmer's better stuff.

The mood dips and rises as the samples and tunes mix together. I'm not a fan of electro-pop or anything Jean Michel-Jarre, and David Holmes is clearly not in their league. His music is influenced by hip-hop and movies.

I'd urge anyone to buy this CD and also check out Holmes' second CD Lets Get Killed (still no apostrophe), which has moments of genius and improvisation that leave you wanting to spread the word of David Holmes' music.

And at this price - what have you got to lose?

3.0 out of 5 stars No t*** on my chairs!, 8 Oct 2000

It is 1995, I've just starting to listen to dance music, I'm going to my first all night rave, Megadog at Manchester Acadamy, and this was the first dance related album I bought. Why? Because it has the coolest title to ever grace a cd spine. The actual music has not dated well, and is no match to Holmes' later recordings. It is however proof of Holmes' talent in creating original and thought provoking music. Tracks such as the opening epic "No Mans Land" and "Slash The Seats" still hit those nerve endings down the base of my spine. David Holmes is a brilliant composer, and one of the most original recording artist in the world today. Buy and enjoy.
