It's fitting that Rob Garza and Eric Hilton, the duo behind Thievery Corporation, run both a club and a label that have the name Eighteenth Street Lounge: all of the music (which shares the same dubby, acid-jazz flavour) on the label is perfectly suited to the club. Abductions and Reconstructions, however, is different from previous ESL releases, such as Dubbed Out in D.C., in that it's easily the label's most accessible album to date. It consists of 15 Thievery remixes of artists from Stereolab to David Byrne to Baba Maal and tends to be a lot more active than the duo's original compositions. Still, the tracks here bear only a passing resemblance to their original forms--in Thievery's hands, the songs are drawn out, tranced up, mellowed down, but each has its own flavour. The end result is an album that's both diverse and consistent and completely enjoyable. You could just as easily dance to these tracks as sit and lounge to them--the perfect soundtrack for either a great bar or your next party. --Randy Silver

With their Thievery Corporation DJ and production house, and their Eighteenth Street Lounge label and (Washington, DC) nightclub, Rob Garza and Eric Hilton spent the late '90s helping redefine the club aesthetic and the club sound aesthetic. Sonically, they are downbeat cats, in love with shaggy hip-hop beats, dubby spaces, organic percussive textures from nearly every continent, and creamy lounge-perfect melodies. Aesthetically, they are hi-fi jet-setters, staying away fromthe dark and depressing, heading always toward the light, airy spotlight.
On this set, David Byrne gets head-noddingrhythm; Stereolab is reduced to a swirl of melodies (including Laetitia's incomprehensible voice) and beats; Rockers Hi-Fi toast on a bed of fat bass lines and brass kicks, amidsta mellow dancehall haze. While every participant, from reggae stalwarts Black Uhuru to trip-hop opera sculptor Edson Cordeiro, may already be a sympathetic fit with the Corporation's methods and affinities, they get further remade in Garzaand Hilton's image. And though it may be simplifyingly gauche to simply call Abductions & Reconstructions a funkier Stateside take on Kruder & Dorfmeister's shtick, it wouldn't beoffbase either; and it'd be a compliment.
