Here's a terrific follow-up release to this same company's marvellous coupling of the two Rawsthorne violin concertos. Proceedings are launched in fine style with a hugely impressive performance of the Concerto for String Orchestra, a meaty, impeccably crafted offering dating from 1949. By contrast, the 1962 Divertimento wears an altogether sunnier demeanour, as do both the Light Music for strings (written in 1938 for the Workers' Music Association) and miniature Suite for recorder and strings (heard here in a deft orchestration by John McCabe). Luminously scored for flute, horn and strings, the 1951 Concertante pastorale is a lovely, fragrant evocation, but the big 'find' here comprises the heartbreaking Elegiac Rhapsody that Rawsthorne completed in January 1964 following the death of his dear friend, the poet Louis MacNeice. The ever-perceptive David Lloyd-Jones draws playing of commendable security and infectious commitment from this admirable Manchester-based group (tip-top solo work throughout), and the sound is crisp and transparent to match. Astonishing value at Naxos price--and really helpful presentation too! -- Andrew Achenbach
