Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
This excellent anthology steers clear of the worst excesses of so-called J-Pop or Japan's thriving psychedelia. But that is not to say that compiler Paul Fisher's anthology lacks hallucinatory moments over its 19 tracks. Kenji Yano's Surf Champlers are apparently barely known in Okinawa let alone in Nippon but if their take on the "James Bond Theme" has anything to do with it they deserve far greater attention. They mix Ventures soundalike guitar and Okinawa's katcharsee song rhythms to great effect. Keeping to an Okinawan agenda, Makota Kubota & The Sunset Gang cover the nearest thing to a popular national anthem that Okinawa has produced in Shoukichi Kina's "Haisai Ojisan" (the narrator of which ridicules the vain posturings of young upstarts who think they know a thing or two about whoring!). Among the Japanese music proper featured is Oki's mixture of Japanese and Ainu culture, the jazz-rock of Takio Ito & Takio Band and Yukihiro Goto's biwa (a teardrop-shaped lute). "Like most things in Japan, the music can be bewildering to a foreigner," offers Fisher in his notes. This compilation may not banish bewilderment but it does alleviate occidental distress! --Ken Hunt

5.0 out of 5 stars Fairly decent collection, 23 Mar 2007
By J. Roberts "Jinny" (Maryland) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This sampler CD of various different kinds of Japanese music is more than listenable, it actually boasts some fairly decent songs.

Chief among these is probably 'Hiyami Kachi Bushi', by the Ayame Band, which has a fairly jolly, upbeat sound. Most of this album contains fairly traditional Japanese music, so don't expect too much pop. However, the song: 'Takio'l Soran Bushi' by Takio Ito is pretty much iconic-sounding, boasting shimmering Japanese strings, hypnotic, repetitive drums and one of the most astoundingly beautiful vocal performances I have ever heard. The song, which roughly translated means 'Communist loving' is all about the pitfalls of capitalism and the beauty of hard work. The overall effect is an entrancing one, with Takio and his backing singers creating a truly unforgettable sense of togetherness, belonging and solidarity.

'Utuwaskarap' is another of the album's great moments, a laid-back, atmospheric and relaxing slice of classical euphoria, laden with subtle strings and vocals about dancing birds of paradise. With astounding beauty, the singer speaks fondly of the beauty he finds in the Japanese forests, and contrasts the beauty of this with the ugliness he finds in buildings and roads, particularly in the West, which he sees as full of sin. "Beautiful eastern promise", he croons, whilst describing his village which he has left behind to go on his travels. "You cannot compare to the material wealth, I find out West." He then goes on to describe the Western politicians as devious and untrustworthy, whilst achingly beautiful strings sweep delicately in the background. All of this is moving and poignant.

To conclude, this sampler CD is by no means exhaustive, but as an interesting and informative introduction to traditional and some contemporary Japanese music, it is a charismatic and beautiful little album.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good listenable introduction to Japanese music, 18 Mar 2000
By A Customer
This CD is light-hearted and accessible enough to be a good first try - its not intimidating or impenetrable and won't join the dusty pile of weird stuff you only play once !

4.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic introduction!!, 2 Nov 2001
This introduction to japanese music is both varied and an amazing insight to the culture of japanese music. It is a must for anyone that is thinking of going to japan and although it only gives a sample of what is really out there, it is rewarding to listen to. Thats hope they release a more modern collection featuring the talents of j-pop hikaru utada and many j-indie bands!!
