5.0 out of 5 stars A superb programme played quite brilliantly, 16 Nov 2004
To the non-guitarist, a full album of classical guitar music from Cuba may at first seem to be a little strange. However, Cuba was under Spanish colonial rule for around 400 years and it is therefore no surprise that the guitar features prominently in most types of Cuban music. This music has also been subjected to many other influences, such as Afro-Cuban rhythms and 20th century classical music, and all are represented on this fine album.

Ernesto Lecuona (1896-1963) is probably the most famous Cuban composer, although at the time he was probably better known as founder of the dance band "Lecuona's Cuban Boys". He was a gifted pianist and his interest in the various dance music forms of his native Cuba influenced many of his piano compositions (if you want to hear them in the original form, look for Polly Ferman's recordings). Three of these have been arranged for guitar on this album and deserve to be much more widely known. Also representing the more rhythmic Afro-Cuban influences in Cuban music are Hector Angulo's "Cantos Yoruba de Cuba". No album of Cuban music could possibly lack pieces by Leo Brouwer. Born in Cuba in 1939, he has become widely recognised as one of the most prominent and influential composers for the guitar. His work ranges markedly in style from avant garde to neo-Romantic. The works chosen for this album are probably not a good introduction for anyone new to Brouwer's music and do not show Brouwer at his most lyrical. This is perhaps made up for by inclusion of the hauntingly beautiful "Prelude" and "Cancion triste" by Carlos Farinas, pieces which again deserve to be more widely known.

Cuban born guitarist Manuel Barrueco is now widely recognised as one of the finest classical guitarists of the 20th century. He has performed world-wide and recorded extensively. This album shows him at his very best throughout. His astonishing technique, coupled with the lyricism and rhythmic vitality of his playing, and his natural feel for the music of his homeland, all make this an album not to be missed.
