Having been a massive fan of the original computer game series, I went in great anticipation to see Wing Commander at the cinema, and was honestly left rather disappointed - apart from one saving feature, the movies score. Regardless of what your views on the movie itself were, any lasting impressions were most likely generated by the music - particularly in the opening credits! The score is by David Arnold and Kevin Kiner. David Arnold has previously composed music for such great sci-fi movies as "Stargate" and "Independence Day". As a collaborator with Kevin Kiner, the two had worked together on the soundtrack to the television series "Stargate: SG 1". Here Arnold composed the themes, whilst Kiner composed the rest of the soundtrack. Wing Commander opens with perhaps one of the greatest orchesteral track I've ever heard, the Wing Commander "Overture". A perfect piece of military music, it is epic in scale with an opening flourish of bells, strings, trumpets and horns, with oodles of bass-filled drums. The energy of the composition is intense, Repeatedly building up and slowing down in its is mood, sparking visual recollection of the opening credits to which it is played. Many of the themes are heard throughout the 37-minute long disc. Parts of the Overture are re-orchestrated several times, and even though this cuts down on the actual amount of fresh material on the disc, the Overture itself has been composed in such a way that it is very difficult to get the slightest bit tired of it. A lot of people may just dismiss this CD straight away because of the movie. My suggestion would be to let go of any expectations or feelings you may have gathered, and listen to just the music itself. If you are in any way a fan of the movie, or just great orchestral works, then this is a must buy!
