Product Description

CD Description
Sonic architect and freeform musician David Toop released arecording of invented instrument sounds on Brian Eno's Opallabel many decades ago. MUSEUM OF FRUIT, volume three in Caipirinha's Architettura series (exploring the relationship between abstract building structure and the constructed innards of modern electronica), is the perfect venue for Toop's multifarious talents. Marrying a vast array of contemporary technology and digital processes to a host of found objects and hand-struck percussion, Toop vividly captures the sonorities of the glass-domed enclosure that lends the album its name.
Toop's imagery and accompanying sound design is absolutely enthralling. "An Arthropod Raising its Head to See theSirakami" suggests cyberpunk more than superstructure, withthousands of scuttling sounds hurrying across a sonic bed of electronic flutters, wheezes, and odd, febrile twists. With its flanged loops and helter-skelter noises, "Glass for Paper" evokes the magic touch of electro-acoustic pioneers such as Stockhausen or Xenakis. Getting lost in this MUSEUM is a downright attractive prospect.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not really music, but ..., 28 Oct 2000

Toop describes this piece - despite the divided tracks it plays continuously - as an environment for the listener. It is. It has a feeling to it, and after the event the overall impression of sitting in a room with this playing feels noticably similar to having sat in a room with music playing. Obviously there are no tunes, or words or sound effects or ... but it does not, to me at least, sound pretentious or pointless. There is certainly something there even though trying to LISTEN to it like a piece of music is more like trying to work out how it was done. I gave three stars because that's half way. Museum of Fruit is not great music, which I guess you would expect from a five star review, but it is very good, er, something
