1.0 out of 5 stars An average performance., 21 April 2001
By A Customer
It is a mystery to me why this recording was reissued. Tosca on disc can be one of the most thrilling of all operas, but this recording falls flat on its face. It is good to hear Birgit Nilsson in the title role and her formidable voice is used to great dramatic effect in Act II. Nilsson also scales down her voice wonderfully in Acts I and III to produce some tender singing in the opera's romantic moments. As Cavaradossi, Franco Corelli produces heroic tone but sounds strained. There are many more moving accounts of the big tenor aria "E lucevan le stelle" than the routine version given here. The major problem with the casting here is Fischer-Dieskau as Scarpia, who seems to have confused bawling at the top of his voice with singing. Dieskau interprets Scarpia as nothing more than a thug and the voice shows no real menace nor conveys the scheming behind this greatest of operatic villains. Dieskau hams up the role no end and is no match for Gobbi (the definitive reading of the role to date)and Bruson on EMI or London on Decca. Maazel conducts with little feeling for the score and, due to his fast tempi, fails to draw out the tension and drama of the peice- the climax of the opera is really disappointing. If you want to hear this opera at its best, invest in the 1953 Callas recording. It is expensive for its age, but has yet to be bettered. If you prefer something more Hi-Fi, Caballe gives a beautiful performance on Phillips, Levine conducts a theatrical account with Scotto, Domingo and Bruson on EMI or there is a good reading on the Naxos label. All are around the same price as the version above and are far better accounts of this great opera.
