4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent production of once popular music. More please!, 30 Sep 2001
The Geisha, with music composed by Sydney Jones and words by Owen Hall with additional numbers by Lionel Monkton was an instant hit when first produced in 1896 in London by George Edwardes (the "Guv'nor" of Gaiety Girls and Theatre fame).
Operetta and Musical Comedy, as the tuneful cousins of opera, were often well orchestrated and more entertaining than "high opera", and this is no exception. Without classical prestige many of these works such as "The Geisha" have faded from memory.
The Geisha's sucess started a "Japanese" craze with "Geisha" products such as woman's hats and men's ties.
Globally a hit,in Europe it rated with "Die Fliedermaus", "The Merry Widow" and "Lilac Time" in popularity.
Hyperion are to be congratulated on reviving it with this excellent and imaginative production.
It has four stars because while there are many excellent numbers, some are slightly repetitive.
The last few years have seen CD's issued of Victorian and Edwardian music such as "The Maid of the Mountains", (Hyperion), "Maritana" (Marco Polo),"The Bohemian Girl"(Argo) and selections such as "The Power of Love" (Melba).
I hope this revival will continue, and we may again hear quality productions of famous but forgotten Victorian and Edwardian music.
Think of Floradoa, Dorothy, The Light of the World, Merry England, Tom Jones, Lurline ......

4.0 out of 5 stars The Geisha by Sydney Jones, 21 April 2004
By Mr E Jones (Coventry United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
I thoroughly enjoyed this recording of Sydney Jones' Geisha. For years Ihave wondered what other musical productions were like in the late 1800's,and how they compared to G&S. Well, here we have an example! G&S loverswill find a lot to enjoy in the music. It's not Sullivan although you canhear bits which remind you of him. It's more like English Offenbach. Joneshas his own voice which comes across clearly in many numbers. For thoseold enough to remember "The Good Old Days" on TV, the music often remindedme of the early 20th Century songs as performed there.
There are some great chorus numbers and some really lovely arias. RonaldCorp conducts with enthusiasm and energy and the performance is full ofvitality and fun. The soloists and chorus are excellent.
Highly recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars From What I Heard - an Entertaining Romp!, 23 April 2009
By Dr. Trimble (Brighton, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I heard this CD from "Jewel of Asia" to the end played on an Internet Classical Radio Station. I was so intrigued to find out what this somewhat G&S-like production was! I knew it wasn't G&S but had to be from around that same era. So I typed the Geisha opera into Google and found this Amazon page. This is the same recording they're playing right now on All Opera Musick. I can't give it 5 stars because I haven't heard the entire CD yet, but what I heard is really enjoyable, if you like this light-opera/musical comedy style. I found the top review above, particularly informative about the era and history. Thanks Readers and Reviewers!
