5.0 out of 5 stars A class reminder of the forgoton era of reggea., 22 Jun 2001
Before I listened to this album, I wasn't too aware of the "missing link" style of reggea that attached SKA to ROOTS; Rocksteady. After having listened to the album It became apparent that this style is as vibrant and exciting as its close cousins. A great introduction to a forgotten, if short lived era of reggea.

Prince Buster described Rocksteady as "the summer season of ska" and this is born from the fact it is more slowed down and soulful than its cousin. This is illustrated best by the hilariously named GAYLADS and their track SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOWS END. Other tracks which live up to the mark of quality of Trojan are DERRICK HARRIOT'S LOSER and JUSTIN HINDS AND THE DONINOES' HERE I STAND. Having said this there isn't a track for which I wouldn't steal if I didn't already have it.

In conclusion if you aint got it - get it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Short and sweet, 2 Jul 2001
The Rocksteady era was short, but in that time some gems where made. Conquering Ruler - Morgan, Derrick, Riding On A High & Windy Day - Paragons, Dreader Than Dread - Honey Boy Martin, Upsetter - Lee Perry. This defiantly is an album to get your lover in the mood, slower than Ska, more filled in then Dub, should put a smile on anyone's face after they have bought it and played it for the first time

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Sublime, 10 Mar 2009
By Mr. S. Morris "Anarchy1962" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
If I was to appear on desert island discs and had to chose then this box set would be it along with the Trojan Rocksteady Rarities box set. This is an outstanding collection of the classic sweet and sublime. I would happily sit on my tropical beach, close to the mountains, mountain streams and herbs listening to the tracks contained here, ha! To be honest I think I prefer rocksteady to the later reggae that followed, having listened to this and various other excellent trojan box sets, it's much more honest and well crafted. Yep this set contains the link between the harsher ska (prior) and reggae (later) following the hot Jamaican summer of 1967. The later reggae derived not only the slower beat of rocksteady, the prominant bass lines, the guitar rythem and vocal harmonies but it's name as rock-steady became r-eggae! If you buy this (and you should) don't be fooled by the first listen, give it a few chances and you will be singing and skankin along before you know it. Enjoy xx
