Love's original lineup splintered in 1968 under mounting intra-band tension. For many fans this was for all intents theend, but leader Arthur Lee quickly put together a new version of the band featuring guitarist Jay Donnelan, bassist Frank Fayad, and drummer George Suranovich. 1971's FALSE START is the third and last album by Love's second incarnation, with the recently departed Donnelan replaced by a string of hired guns.
A couple of tracks even feature solos by Jimi Hendrix, an old friend of Lee, who had given the then-fledgling guitarist his first session gig on an otherwise-forgottensingle by Rosa Lee Brooks. The opening Hendrix-esque wah-wah onslaught of "The Everlasting First" quickly recedes into an anguished yet surprisingly melodic blues-rocker that's among Lee's best post-FOREVER CHANGES tunes. FALSE START is not Lee's best work, but it's far from his worst.
