Product Description

CD Description

Since striking out on his own with a cadre of jazz musicians on 1985's THE DREAM OF THE BLUE TURTLES, Sting's nomadic wanderings in search of new musical challenges have been a hallmark of all his solo work. MERCURY FALLING continues in this vein, skipping between genres and musical locales. The appearence of The Memphis Horns on "You Still Touch Me" allowsSting to tap into the Stax/Volt spirit, complete with Dominic Miller's Steve Cropper-like phrasing and some of the ex-Police-man's most soulful singing to date. French lyrics are the only anomaly on the bossa-nova beat of "La Belle Dame Sans Regrets", which brings to mind Antonio Carlos Jobim's arrangements, while the combination of the East London Gospel Choir and Branford Marsalis' restrained playing add a pious atmosphere to "Let Your Soul Be Your Pilot".
The Englishman's greatest leap is into the heart of Nashville with a songabout divorce and child custody. B.J. Cole's pedal steel and drummer Vinnie Colaiuta's clip-clop beat add a tear-in-my-beer authenticity to "I'm So Happy I Can't Stop Crying", bringing Sting as close to the Grand Ole Opry as he's likely toget.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of Sting's most underrated albums, 9 April 2003
By Nahum Wengrov (Jerusalem Israel) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
After the pop-oriented and somewhat kitchy "Ten Summoner's Tales," Sting returns to his original style (original in both senses), and produces an excellent mix of Rock songs and ballads. Sometimes upbeat, sometimes melancholic, but always with an optimistic twist. This is one of Sting's best solo albums ever produced, as beautiful and as refreshing as "Nothing Like the Sun." Highly recommended for any serious Rock fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars The great lost Sting LP?, 8 Jan 2001
By Timothy Hooper - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This is easily the most consistent set from Sting. It was hard to live up to his previous release (Ten Summoners Tales) but by making a less eclectic, more considered LP, Sting has created his most beautiful set of songs. While it doesn't contain the instant heart-stoppers such as 'Fields of Gold' or 'They Dance Alone', there is a deeply appealing contentment about the songs. This CD is the aural equivalent of getting home and curling up infront of a roaring fire with the one you love. Highly recommended.
