1. Movement

Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Sombre, stately, and reverent, the nine untitled movements (and concluding seven-minute epilogue) presented by keyboardist-composer Vangelis convey the mood of a requiem. These 10 lengthy works form a tribute to the respected native of Crete (1541-1614) whose religiously minded paintings (many created in near isolation in the Spanish city of Toledo) are notable, among other reasons, for their singular cross-pollination of Byzantine, Venetian, and Spanish influences. (The artist's nickname, El Greco, is in fact a linguistic merger of Spanish and Greek.) Musically, the recording dwells in a near-classical atmosphere that only occasionally offers any hints of rhythmic progression or ethereal expansiveness. Instead, the music conveys a more formal, classically rooted seriousness that at times features the operatic embellishments of soprano Montserrat Caballe and tenor Kostantinos Paliatsaras. Perhaps the recording's loveliest moments reside in the fifth movement, where Vangelis adorns the sustained earnestness of his work with some gently evocative piano runs. This, however, is an exception to an otherwise weighty musical endeavour. --Terry Wood

CD Description

Greek composer/keyboardist Vangelis has been through so many stylistic mutations over the years that it's hard to pin down his musical centre. From the progressive rock of his band Aphrodite's Child to his art pop collaborations with Yes vocalist Jon Anderson and his romantic film score work, he's shown many sides of a complex artistic persona. EL GRECO extends his vision one step further. Inspired by and dedicated to legendary 16th century Greek painter El Greco (Domenikos Theotokopoulos), this is an impressionistic aural landscape. The album is filled up by a single 11-movement symphonic piece written by Vangelis and rendering in a surprisingly organic manner on his arsenal of keyboards. Fans of his film scores should find much to enjoy in this delicate work full of sophisticated but friendly textures.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Vangelis (probably), 3 Mar 2005
Movement I in particular I was convinced I'd heard before: more Vangelis than Vangelis! Classical, classy, dark, ancient, beautiful, rich, deep:- just wonderful! I can't recommend the thing too highly. Beethoven sounds like someone on a kazoo after this (only joking). Wonderful choice of sounds and colours. A cathedral in a CD case, and yours for about six sobs in the used section. I've bought more copies of this one for friends than just about anything. Definitely in my top 5 albums of all time. You get the picture...

5.0 out of 5 stars CLASSICAL SPLENDOUR, 27 Sep 2004
Simply put,"El Greco" is the finest piece of music by Vangelis i have ever heard, and the most emotionally-charged music he has ever done. The power and sheer majesty of the music is awe-inspiring and a total joy to behold throughout each of the ten movements.Brooding, dark and haunting - this is an album of affecting melodies combined with a complete mastery of dynamics, making this an exceptionally sublime listening experience. The music has a grandeur that few albums can equal, indeed it's hard to believe that this is the work of one man such is the towering achievement evident here. one of my favourite albums of any genre, not just instrumental, this is an essential purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars Musical Perfection, 1 Sep 2005
By A Customer
This is a truly excptional album. I have been listening to Vangelis for a number of years now but this is without doubt the best thing he has ever done. I bought El Greco when it was commercially released in 1998 and I deliberately don't play it too often in case I get too used to it! It is a distinctly Vangelis album, steeped in joyous melancholy, but more than that, it is an album where Vangelis as composer and not just as innovator comes to the forefront. It is a composers template of how to draft an album; judiciously paced and balanced, with a masterlike grip over the timbre and dynamics. In a world of cheap, throwaway plastic pap, El Greco is an essential work for your collection.
