This set contains Procol Harum's seventh, eighth, and ninthalbums (GRAND HOTEL, EXOTIC BIRDS AND FRUIT, and PROCOL'S NINTH). While the band's reputation was built on its first three albums (nicely packaged as the 30TH ANNIVERSARY ANTHOLOGY), Procol Harum remained quite popular during the first half of the '70s, as it toured and recorded regularly. Organistand founding member Matthew Fisher departed after A SALTY DOG (the band's third release), with guitarist Robin Trower leaving three albums later, just prior to the recording of the earliest of these works.
With the band's sound well in place, replacements moved the band forward nicely. Furthermore, Procol Harum's primary writers were still guiding the ship. Singer-pianist Gary Brooker and lyricist Keith Reid werea well-matched writing team. On these albums, their images and wordplay are paired with appropriate melodies and embellishments. Booker's wonderfully soulful voice and the drum work of B. J. Wilson help complete the band's inimitable sound.
