A condensed history of 20th Century String Quartet writing sandwiches the early 12-note intensity of Anton Webern with outstanding pieces from the later 20th Century. Webern's brevity and intensity of expression is captured superbly, typically containing whole emotions in single notes or tiny phrases. George Crumb's 'Black Angels' sears the senses from the nightmarish opening to the explosive Pavana Lachrymae to the return of the insects at the conclusion, pushing the techniques of string playing to extremes and using voices to add to the vision. Lutoslawski's String Quartet is a classic of the genre; musical mobiles hang in the air, providing an ever changing bed of textures, performers play independantly from each other coinciding at various points throughout the work. It is a piece which all string players should hear, in fact, the whole CD is an essential for performers, newcomers to the genre, and 20th Century music enthusiasts alike. The Cikada Quartet bring across the energy, the delicacy and the emotion of these pieces superbly...a must.
