Releases of Bennett's work on this label, Lyrita and the Marco Polo during the 1990s mean that there is now plenty of opportunity to assess the value of his work, even though most of it is not available in published form. Bennett clearly has a considerable melodic gift and no difficulty in marshalling large scale forces. The issue for the modern listener, I feel, is whether Bennett is merely a follower of Mendelsohn or a true individual composer with his own identity. The issue is compounded by the fact that very little music other than Mendelsohn's is available in this period, so that composer stands out as the obvious influence. There is no doubt that Bennett subscribed completely to M's composing and indeed performing ideals just as Parry did to Brahms's (and one has to ask the same question about the relation between the music of those composers). My view is that Bennett has plenty of individual ideas and the occasional similarity to M should not make us disparage him - after all, where would that leave Mozart if we were to look critically at the influence of Haydn? Bennett, like all virtuoso performers, likes to play fast and furious, but if often at his most appealing in the slower, gentler and more cheerful passages. The Symphony on this disc, about which the sleeve notes are rather apolgetic, is in my view a very successful and individual work.
